When Katie and I got married we gave out a CD (yes, an actual CD, this was 2010) to all our guests filled with songs we loved. We decided to included some new pieces and I am thrilled to have gotten her vocals on both of these super fun tributes. The "Wedding Collage" explores some classical themes associated with weddings in new ways: Mendelssohn's Wedding March is introduced as a punky blast and soon gives way to goofy intoning and sitars for a statement of the California theme. An acoustic version of Satie's Gymnopedie No. 1 (probably my favorite ever melody, and one that was featured during our ceremony) utilizes a melodrama of will-she-won't-she vocals by Katie. The final section places the uber-familiar "Here Comes the Bride" melody by Wagner firmly into the structure of the Jeopardy! theme music (key change and all).
"Thank You" was a statement of (you guessed it) thanks to the people who made the wedding, and our general union, what it was, and what it is. There are some legit good Katie vocals on this, I think, and the style of it really fit the rest of the disc (which had lots of torch songs and emotional oldies). It has a feel and intro syncopation based in part on Bacharach's great "Don't Make Me Over" and I ain't sorry for it.
