The Pill Versus the Springhill Mine Disaster
2010

what: classical song setting

for fans of: Ives, Webern, Debussy, Sondheim
I had the idea that I was going to convert the text of ALL of the little poems in Richard Brautigan's terrific The Pill Versus the Springhill Mine Disaster into classical song form a la Charles Ives. In the end I made about four of them, and one was a short animated film (which I'll eventually put up here when we get our screening room built in the new wing of the Museum). This song is a favorite of my composed settings, and I think I was able to get across all that I love about this poem in the music.
