Ah, the first of many covers albums in the Museum. Cover versions of songs beloved and obscure, faithful and re-inventive, well fitting and ill advised... I am a fan of the art of interpretation. In this case, I attempted to very faithfully recreate the instrumentation, production and mixing of several of my favorite recordings so as to give myself a crash course in my (newly acquired) mini ProTools home "studio". In only a few instances did I intentionally veer from the intentions of the source recording -- the ending of "Dear God" brought in a heavier guitar sound for the outro, the drums in "Shabby Doll" have more of an intentional affected loop sound, and Scott Walker's terrific mid-period song "The Electrician" is treated as if it was a recording of his from a much later era (say, just after Tilt).
