These are songs from a proposed version of a musical I was briefly working on with Matt Moses. The source material by Matt drew from matters of gender and childbirth in a way that was by turns ridiculous, sensual and creepy, and so for some reason my mind went to the sex-forward romanticism of the musical Hair. Most of Charlie's material was meant to be acoustic guitar-driven and folky, while more traditional "musical-like" music interacted with him. "Happy Pain," which may have started the show, features essentially the exact same melodic motif in both sections - hers and his - but with a different rhythm and setting. Charlie's musical pronouncements always are accompanied by soulful folk rock and a slightly cheesy leer. I like this material.
